Essay: Basuco-a form of cocaine

In the early 1980s, the society was already witnessing the effects of these cartels on a larger scale. The Colombian youths engaged themselves in a widespread addiction to basuco. This was a form of cocaine that was very contaminated and addictive. It was usually smoked together with marijuana or tobacco. Basuco was dumped into the market by the drug lords because it was not of benefit to them internationally (Clawson & Rensselaer, 1996).

It was not of “export” quality. Sold cheaply to this youth in the streets, it suddenly took over the popularity of the market from marijuana. This drug left hundreds of thousands of addicts in Colombia. It completely disoriented the Colombian youths, leaving most of them with permanent nervous disorders.
