Essay: Nutritional Supplements

Also known as food supplements and nutritional supplements, dietary supplements may be defined as vitamins, minerals or herbs that are taken to complement ones diet (MedlinePlus). They may be in the form of capsules, pills, fluid or in powder form. Due to the fast pace of today’s life, many people do not get the opportunity to incorporate all the required food groups into their diets. For such people then, supplements are extremely important, as they will provide the nutrients missing from their diet. This is helpful, as the body will fight diseases that may be present because of a lack of the necessary nutrients. However, supplements may have serious side effects if overdosed, for example, hair loss, dizziness, and headaches.

Additionally, some supplements have not been certified by the necessary authorities’ meaning that they may be unsafe for the users (McDaniels). I am of the opinion therefore that dietary supplements are necessary, especially for the sick, pregnant and lactating mothers and for those who are unable to eat a balanced diet. Nonetheless, the supplements should be taken with precaution and only after being advised by a doctor or a licensed nutritionist. The rest of the populace should strive to eat a healthy and balanced diet from which they may derive all the necessary nutrients. This way, they will have no need to take supplements, which are quite expensive.
