Book Review on Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë – The famous work by Emily Bronte is better aptly defined as a study of obsessive retribution, in which Heathcliff inflicts agony in retaliation for a prior slight that prevented him from marrying his beloved Catherine.

After Catherine and her brother, Hindley’s, father discovered Heathcliff impoverished on the streets of the surrounding city, the two had grown up together. Heathcliff had been raised by his father as if he were his own child, and he had even preferred him over his son at times.

As a result, Hindley despised Heathcliff, and once his father died, he had his adoptive brother work on the estate, a rung or two under his and Catherine’s rank.

Rather than marrying Catherine’s beloved Heathcliff, Hindley persuaded her to marry her next-door neighbor, kindling Heathcliff’s horrible thirst for vengeance.

So starts the bulk of the novel, in which Heathcliff relentlessly abuses each character. And it’s unyielding. Reading about the cruelty that Bronte’s characters face may be nearly terrible at times.

However, I grew a little fascinated with this novel, much like Heathcliff in his pursuit for vengeance. I was terrified to learn what was in store for each individual, even as I hoped for some sort of salvation.

However, I grew a little hooked with this novel, just like Heathcliff in his pursuit of vengeance. I was terrified to learn what was in store for each individual, while still hoping for a happy ending.

The backdrop amid the English moors is both magnificent and disturbing, with their beauty serving as one of the few saving graces for individuals stuck on the properties. I breathed a sense of relief when Heathcliff’s wife managed to escape from the limits of the estates.

The vocabulary is difficult at first, but once you get into the swing of things, Bronte has a captivating way with words. Some of the terms used struck me as charming ‘saucy’ is frequently used to signify ‘naughty’ or ‘sassy.’ However, one character, Joseph the farm hand’s, language remained incomprehensible to me.
