Project Background


Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) attempts to integrate all departments and functions across a company onto a single computer system. ERP allows organizations to get rid of a standalone computer system in many departments and replaces them with an integrated software solution with individual sub-modules for each department. It provides for an efficient inter-department monitoring while allowing the management to see a clearer picture of the enterprise by correlating reports from all levels and departments of the organization (Creative Chaos 2007).

While an ERP is efficient when implemented successfully, many of the companies fail with their ERP implementation because of poor decisions, lack of requirements definition and inadequate resources (Leon 2007 p.133).


The goal of this research will be to investigate how project management acts a critical success factor in the implementation of an ERP. It will also demonstrate how the successful integration of business strategies of leads to increased performance of a business.

Significance of the Research

Though there is much available on the internet about a successful implementation of an ERP, there are not many resources that shed light on factors that result in a failure. Most of the research on implementation failure of ERP lacks the in-depth discussion. This research will try to explore one of these factors, project management, in more details. This research will also look at the performance of the company from a unique business strategy perspective and demonstrate how successfully implementing business strategies in an ERP have a positive effect on it.

Scope of the Project

The scope of the project is limited to the impact of project management only. This has been done in order to keep the research focused and to make it comprehensive by keeping within the limits of available resources such as time and budget.


Generally, two methodologies are used to conduct research. A positivistic approach can involve many variables in a realistic situation that can make it very difficult to draw firm conclusions (Saunders et al. 2007). Therefore, in a positivistic approach, most valid conclusions can be drawn by controlling all the extraneous factors that might affect results. On the contrary, in an interpretative approach, controlling the factors invalidates results and most valid conclusions are attained by a deepest understanding of the problem in its context (Saunders et al. 2007).

Selected Research Design

The result of this research will be built by gaining a deep understanding of the how project management affects the ERP implementation and the impact of ERP on the company performance. Hence, the research methodology used for this research will be interpretative.

Primary Research

Primary research will be conducted by the survey and interview of the implementation team, the users and the company management.

Secondary Research

The secondary research will be done using earlier research in the form of articles and books, available through the internet and the library.
