All voice communications made through the vehicle are made through making the use of a cellular network. The voice console in the vehicle is connected to a special device called a Vehicle Comm and Interface Module (VCIM), which is used to transmit cellular signal for the vehicle to OnStar’s communication network. This antenna is more powerful than a normal mobile phone antenna (3 watts compared to only 0.6 watts) which allows for a larger coverage area for OnStar subscriber than an ordinary mobile phone subscriber.

The OnStar system also uses voice recognition software to provide web surfing capabilities through the use of Virtual Advisor. Virtual Advisor uses the VoiceXML text-to-voice technology to translate voice commands from the subscriber into text as well as converting the received information to reading out to the subscriber. The location service is provided through the use of a GPS receiver also embedded in to the VCIM. In order to collect the information of the subscriber car remotely, the OnStar service uses an event data recorder called the Advanced Automatic Crash Notification (AACN) system. It consists of four modules which are the sensors, the Sensor Diagnostic Module (SDM), the VCIM and the Antenna.  The places and numbers of sensors vary with different vehicles. When a crash occurs, these sensors transmit the information to the SDM. The SDM itself also contains an accelerometer which is used to measure the severity of the crash. The SDM sends the information from accelerometer as well as the sensors to the VCIM, from which it is transmitted to OnStar through the use of the OnStar cellular network. When an advisor receives this information, the vehicle location is tracked through the use of GPS and necessary steps are taken to evaluate the situation and decide on further steps (HowStuffWorks , 2009).

Cellular Network

The OnStar Network relies on cellular network to enable voice and data communication to and from OnStar equipped vehicles. OnStar itself does not own a cellular network but relies on a number of networks owned by independent cellular companies that have cellular broadcast licences in various areas of US and Canada. These networks run both analog and digital cellular services. The analog cellular service transmits voice on a continuous radio wave using a rapidly changing frequency technique similar to FM standard and operates in the 800MHz frequency band. These frequency modulating networks operating in 800 MHz band use a standard called Advanced Mobile Phone Services (AMPS). In a digital cellular system, any analog signal such as voice is converted into a digital signal before it is transmitted over the air. They operate in both 800 MHz and 1900 MHz frequency bands. Currently there are two dominant networks in the US and Canada, which are called CDMA and GSM. The OnStar system using the CDMA network of Verizon Wireless in the US and Bell Mobility in Canada in order to provide it services in these regions.
