Introduction

Benjamin Franklin is known as a man of honor in the American society. He is discerned to be a hard-working self made man, who started to work at an early age and later progressed to the acclaimed positions of that time. This paper is going to highlight the qualities of Benjamin Franklin that distinguished him from a typical colonist. Examples from his autobiography are mentioned to support the argument.

Benjamin Franklin is not a typical man

Benjamin Franklin was born to poor family in Boston. Due to the financial crisis he suffered, he couldn’t continue his education and did not graduate, however he was a multi-talented man. He possessed the talents of a musician, a philosopher, a scientist, an artist and above all a writer. Unlike others, he wanted to strive and improve himself to serve the society and other people. As he once said: “The mere speculative conviction that it was our interest to be completely virtuous was not sufficient to prevent our slipping, and that the contrary habits must be broken, and good ones acquired and established, before we can have any dependence on a steady, uniform rectitude of conduct” (Franklin, 1996, p.64).

Franklin also tried to compose the metropolitan life healthier. He strived to make Philadelphia a safer place to live so he started the Union Fire Company in 1736. Later, in 1752, he set up America’s first fire insurance company. He was alsoappointed as the Postmaster of Philadelphia and tried to give his best to settle and then grow the setup of postage locally. He sold his printing office and retired from business in 1748 at the age of 42.
