In order to understand how the ZigBee standard differentiates itself from other protocols in its class such as 802.11 and Bluetooth, a comparison between them can be performed. The IEEE 802.11 is a set of standards, from which, 802.11b is most commonly preferred for comparison because it operates in the same band as ZigBee and Bluetooth, the 2.4 GHz frequency band.  IEEE 802.11b has a typical speed of 11 Mbps and is able to provide high-speed wireless Internet connection between two devices. The indoor range of IEEE 802.11b is typically between 30 to 100 meters (Lowe 2007). On the other hand, Bluetooth has a comparatively lower data rate and coverage range.

It can transmit at the data rate of 3Mbps within the data range of 2 to 10 meters (Shelly, Vermaat and Quasney 2008). A popular application of Bluetooth is in wireless headsets, where the Bluetooth technology is used to provide means communication between a base unit and a hand’s free headset. ZigBee, has a much lower data rate than either Bluetooth and 802.11b WLAN standard, therefore, making it unsuitable for use in applications requiring a high-speed data connectivity. However, due to its simplicity, it provides significantly longer battery life, making it perfect for applications where the goal of communication is only to transmit and receive simple commands or to gather simple information from sensors, such as temperature or brightness.
