We define a computer ‘virus’ as a program that can ‘infect’ other programs by modifying them to include a possibly evolved copy of itself. With the infection property, a virus can spread throughout a computer system or network using the authorizations of every user using it to infect their programs. Every program that gets infected may also act as a virus and thus the infection grow”. (p.22)

A computer system is an interconnected series of devices, each serving a different purpose. The central processing unit is the main hub where all operations of the system take place. It has a control unit which interprets and processes input from external analogue devices such as the keyboard and mouse. Its arithmetic logic unit is responsible for performing complex calculations and sends information to output devices that can communicate and record information such as printers or a display unit such as a monitor. And finally a primary storage unit which stores program data during processing of this information and can back up the data to a secondary source such as a hard drive (O’Brien & Marakas, 2008 p. 382).
