Every file and directory on an NTFS volume have an attribute attached to it which is called Last Access Time. It is used to denote the date and time a file or directory was last accessed, that is the last time a user displayed the directory listing, added a new file to the folder, or made changes to the file. The NTFS file system uses the Window NT 64-bit time estimation for file and directory timestamps.

The date can range from January 1, 1601, to May 28, 60056 while the time is estimated at a resolution of 10 million cycles per second. However, in reality, no clock in any system provides this precision and hence only the best precision of time is used for time stamping. Furthermore, the timestamp stored in the standard attribute also does not have the same precision (Paragon Software Group). In NTFS, the date and time stamp stored on the drive is not current and NTFS has been designed to wait for an hour before the last access time is updated. This is because of the reason that if every access to file or directory (even read operations or directory listing) would result in last access time field update, that every operation would become a write operation, affecting the performance of both disk and operating system. Therefore in an NTFS system, the most recent accessed time is always stored in memory and updated on the disk in MFT record and parent directory record. However, it is important to mention here that any file-based query of last accessed time is accurate because the result is returned from memory, where the accurate date and time are present (Microsoft).
