Software Licensing

A software license can be defined as a contract of agreement between the software publisher and the end user, for the usage of software according to rules and regulation, usually defined in End User License Agreement. Software is either published under free license or paid license. Free license allows the user to use the full functionality of the software and sometime allows the user to modify the software. Paid Software license allow no or restricted use of the software generally but the user has to purchase the key or dongle from the publisher in order to use the full functionality of the software.

A software license can be a paper agreement or can be embedded in the software itself. The license process for most software is usually electronic, which result in a key or a dongle issued to the user for enabling the software to be used. Electronic software license agreement is usually presented to user during the installation process, disagreeing to which results in the application not being installed (WiseGeek.com, 2009).

Differences between Microsoft Office and Microsoft Windows

Microsoft issues both Microsoft Office and Microsoft Windows under paid license, however, both softwares differ in the task that they perform. Microsoft office is a productivity application suite that contains application to provide the user with tool to enhance productivity usually in an office environment. It contains a variety of business application such as MS Word for word processing requirement, MS Excel for spreadsheet and graphs requirements, MS PowerPoint for handling presentation requirements and MS Outlook for handling electronic communication and information management requirements. There are other products as well such as MS Access and MS Communicator. (Microsoft Corporation, 2009)

Microsoft Windows is an Operating System which provides the ability to the user to use the computer for productivity purpose. Microsoft Windows is not itself productivity software but it allows productivity software to be run on a computer. MS Office also runs on Microsoft Windows platform (Russinovich & Solomon, 2004).
