Microsoft has argued that companies that will spend money to deploy Windows 7 will save money in the long run. In an analysis conducted by Intel Corporation, it was shown that though Windows 7 was expensive its potential Net Present Value (NPV) was much lower than Windows previous version. Intel credited this reduction  to lower service desk costs, which resulted from improve OS stability along with built-in troubleshooting tools as well as reduced desktop PC energy consumption (Intel Corporation, 2009).

Ubuntu Linux 9.04

While the Linux operating system is popular for its cost-effectiveness, Ubuntu goes further. It eliminates the per-sear license cost entirely, allowing enterprise deployments of identical code on developers’ workstations and production servers without the need of license counting. Companies can also purchase SLA-based support rather than buying support for every machine. Ubuntu also features a faster deployment time enabling a fully functional system in only half an hour. Ubuntu also features a thin-client architecture which allows for upgrading and maintenance of up to 30 servers by updating and maintaining only a single server (Shuttleworth, 2007).

OS X Snow Leopard

Mac OS X Snow Leopard enhances the ease of use features its users even more from its predecessors. It features a more advanced and sleek Finder application which takes advantage of latest technologies like 64-bit support and Grand Central Dispatch to perform much better. Snow Leopard offers a faster, more reliable installation procedure, which is claimed by Apple to be 50% faster than previous versions. It also features a much smaller footprint, freeing about 7GB of space after installation which can be re-utilized (Apple Inc., 2009).

Performance

Windows 7

In their evaluation, Intel conducted several tests to compare the performance of Windows 7 with Windows XP SP3 on a notebook with Intel vPro technology. The result was that Windows 7 was more responsive in performing everyday tasks such as booting and launching of office productivity applications. The reason for this enhanced performance is that Windows 7 include a tool to manage and tune its capabilities that optimize its performance (Intel Corporation, 2009).

Ubuntu Linux 9.04

Technology news website TuxRadar reports on Ubuntu Performance as “…From install time to GUI efficiency, Ubuntu beats Windows and is often twice as fast. Where Windows 7 is competitive, the difference is something the average user would not notice. The average GNU/Linux user is now getting better absolute performance from their computer as well as better value than the average Windows user.” (TuxRadar, 2009)

Mac OS X Snow Leopard

Mac Performance Guide Website found Mac OS X Snow Leopard performance to be much improved over its predecessor. It reports performance gains of up to 30%, which according to its standards “is the best value for money in a long, long time”(Chambers, 2009).

Windows 7

For Windows 7, PC World in one of its article concludes that “…in order for Windows 7 to achieve its full potential, third party hardware vendors must come through with appropriate products.” (Apple Inc, 2009).

Ubuntu Linux 9.04

In his book Beginning Ubuntu Linux, Keir Thomas, the author of the book comments on the hardware support of Linux in general by saying “…The age-old criticism of Linux operating system lagging behind Windows in terms of hardware support is long dead. The majority of add-ons such as digital cameras and printers will all work with Ubuntu immediately, with little, if any, configuration.” (Thomas, 2007).

Mac OS X Snow Leopard

Regarding the supported hardware by Snow Leopard, the Apple website provides information that all hardware that uses Bluetooth, USB or Audio Cable are supported by the operating system. It is also significant to know that With Mac OS X, Apple has removed the support of PowerPCs from its operating system. (Inc., 2009).
