Some of the lessons that we can obtain from reading Chen’s account of the land reforms in China include the environment of China, their life and society in various societal stratum preceding 1949, the surroundings that promoted a communist movement, the purpose of the Chinese communists, the basis for their triumph; and the changes that they brought about by the creating the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1949.

To date, the environmental dilemmas facing China are not simply of regional concern, but have found themselves to be of great concern to the rest of the world. With almost every discussion of global environmental issues relating at some point to China, they have become a focal point of much environmental distress. Home to approximately 16 of the 20 most polluted cities in the world, China suffers from environmental degradation on a countless number of fronts and the likes of which the world has never seen. The loss of biodiversity among a countless number of lakes and streams; industrial emissions choking the majority of Chinese citizenry; massive deforestation (over centuries) resulting in a quarter of the land being turned into desert; these are only a handful of the problems which China is forced to contend with.
