Company Background
Lonely Planet was a consequence of a honeymoon vacation taken by Tony Wheeler and Maureen Wheeler about 30 years ago. During the trip, the newlywed couple traveled across the different continents and had an unforgettable experience in the process. The duo decided that their trip was too good to keep to themselves and decided to share this with other people. With the encouragement and support of friends and family, they compiled their first travel guide, “Across Asia on the cheap.” The success of this travel book led to many others and the creation of Lonely Planet. Now Lonely Planet covers many destinations around the world (Lonely Planet Publications, 2009).
In the October of 2007, Lonely Planet was acquired by BBC Worldwide, who bought a 75 % share in the company. BBC Worldwide have promised to place high importance on the values cherished by Lonely Planet. These include providing quality advice and consultancy, independence for creativity for writers and editors and importance for independent travelers (Lonely Planet Publications, 2009).
