Introduction

If one was to define what was meant by the word fashion itself, one could use the definition provided by brain quote:

“The prevailing mode or style, especially of dress; custom or conventional usage in respect of dress, behavior, etiquette, etc.; particularly, the mode or style usual among persons of good breeding; as, to dress, dance, sing, ride, etc., in the fashion.”

The above definition encompasses the various modes and forms that the term fashion encompasses and hence, from what can be ascertained are that fashion does not exist in entirety but in fact many fashions prevail at one point in time. In order to analyze this statement, the different eras, theories, areas of fashion would need to studied and understood.

Fashion in its most basic sense is defined as a social marvel and can be identified through its influences on many different departments such as architecture, arts and crafts, dance and music, economics, etiquette, politics and media. Hence, fashion cannot be categorized in one specific department or in one specific area as it is commonly misunderstood to be belonging to the area of clothes only.
