Another hormone known as the Follicle stimulating hormone is responsible for the creation and multiplication of structures called follicles in the ovary. Only one of these follicles is allowed to grow and mature. This maturity is important because it is only when these follicles open that an egg or ovum is released. The release of this egg is called ovulation which is shown occurring in the diagram on the 14^th day.

The release of this ovum is where the luteinizing hormone comes in. The luteinizing hormone is a chemical which is released from the part of the brain called the pituitary gland. This gland has two parts the front and back or anterior and posterior. The front or anterior part is where this hormone comes from. In men this hormone is important in the creation of testosterone which is responsible for making sperms. In women however, it has an important in the first two weeks of the menstrual cycle to maintain normal function and ensure ovulation occurs. At first LH along with FSH makes sure that the ovary grows to maturity and its growth is also what leads to the release of estrogen.
