Alzheimer’s disease is a brain disorder that is progressive, degenerative and irreversible. It goes by a number of names including primary degenerative dementia of the Alzheimer’s type, senile dementia of the Alzheimer’s type or simply, the Alzheimer’s. It can also be shortened to AD.

It is mostly diagnosed in people of over 65 years of age and it is therefore considered to be age-related. However, the less prevalent early-onset Alzheimer’s has been diagnosed in much younger individuals. The disease was first explained by Dr. Alois Alzheimer, a German psychiatrist and neuropathologist, in 1906 when he discovered some rare changes in the brain tissue of a woman who had died of an unusual mental disease. The disease is actually named after him. In this paper, we will discuss the nature, stages, symptoms, causes and the risk factors of contracting the Alzheimer’s disease. We will also look at the situation in Canada in terms of the prevalence rates of the disease and the impact on the economy and the healthcare system.
