The HSPA standard, on the other hand, uses UMTS architecture as a base, which means that it supports voice transmission as well. Therefore it has support for both soft and hard handovers. The soft handover in HSPA also results in improved gain and link budget, resulting from macro-combining. It also reduces that intra-cell interference, thus, increasing the network capacity. The hard handover procedure in HSPA is only used for intra-frequency handover and intersystem handover to GSM (Holma, & Toskala, 2007).

Supported Frequencies


A number of frequency bands are under consideration for use with WiMAX, but currently, only profiles for 2.3 GHz, 2.4 GHz, and 3.3-3.8 GHz have been certified and are being used in the deployment of WiMAX (Ericsson, 2009).


The current standard of HSPA supports frequency bands which range from 800MHz to 2.6GHz, which include most of currently operating 2G bands around the world. In most of the deployment, however, the 2.1GHz band is the most proffered choice although HSPA is also being deployed in the 850MHz band in Australia, Some parts of South and North America as well as Asia (Holma, & Toskala, 2007).

Many differences exist between HSPA and WiMAX standards. However, they are both successful as they both support sufficiently high speeds, considering the needs of today. The choice of selection between these services is significantly influenced by the presence or absence of 3G infrastructure. However, as with their predecessors, they would not be sufficient to meet the demands of tomorrow, hence these technologies are also being evolved. WiMAX standard 802.16e is going to be replaced by 802.16m standard (Murph, 2007), while HSPA will give way to 3G-LTE (Long Term Evolution) standard, with both standard boasting support for all-IP networks and speeds up to 1Gbps(Puthenkulam, 2009).
