1.         Introduction to IBM z/9 Mainframe

The IBM System z9 is the top of the line main Mainframe computer series which was announced by IBM in 2005. With the System z9 series, IBM introduced a feature rich Mainframe platform with increase performance as well as system capacity. The IBM z9 Mainframe offers rich security features that can help businesses in maximizing the resources and their utilization while providing the ability to integrate applications as well as data across the infrastructure. While offering the synergy of latest technologies, IBM has also kept this fact in perspective that businesses have made a lot of investment in existing data processing applications and the business processes that are associated with them. Hence, the IBM z9 has been built to provide new features and functions while being able to accommodate existing applications. As has been the case with every new generation of Mainframe Mainframes by IBM, the System z9 also reduces a number of constraints that have existed on earlier system and may have inhibited the growth of application on previous systems (White, Injey, Chambers, Gasparovic, Hamid, Hatfield, Hewitt, Jorna & Kappler, 2007).

1.1.  z/Architecture

The IBM z/architecture, used by System z9, extends the IBM Enterprise System Architecture/390 (ESA/390). Its main features include an extension of general registers width from 32 to 64 bits, 64-bit operations as well as 64-bit addressing use for both real and virtual storage. The z/Architecture also introduces new instructions which improve the performance of applications written using high-level languages and optimize the handling of multi-byte character encodings. While offering a very different architecture, z/Architecture still remains compatible with the previous generation ESA/390 applications while increasing the ease with which new application programs can be developed (Plambeck, Eckert, Webb, & Rogers, 2002).

1.2.    Advantages over Earlier Versions

The IBM z9 series offers a number of advantages over earlier versions Mainframe through evolution of technologies. The System z9 series has evolved the multi processor system design by offering a cost effective modular multi-book design. It has also extended the real and virtual memory addressing function by providing a complex Translation Lookaside Buffer (TLB) and has also evolved the real memory size to 512GB of system memory. IBM has also enhanced the performance of processors using in System z9 Mainframe with clock speed increased to 1.65 GHz, which a significant improvement over previous zSeries systems. The I/O channels in System z9 have also seen significant increased from a maximum of 16 in S/360 Mainframes, which have been achieved by increasing the number of STIs and the use of high-speed channel features such as FICON and MIDAW in the I/O cages. With System z9, IBM has also increased the number of devices that can be addressed to 128K per partition by employing Multiple SubChannel Sets (MSS) technologies. Another improvement of System z9 over its earlier generations is the introduction of ZIIP processors which are designed to offload certain types of processing (Ogden, Gasparovic, & White, 2007).
