For the purpose of this assignment, the technique of discourse analysis was used to carry out an interview with a multilingual individual of Palestinian background, who spent his early formative years in Australia, moving back to his native Palestine in the mid-seventies only to be later uprooted due to the war in his country.

This forced him to migrate to Australia and spend the remaining years of his life as a refugee. Before delving into details of the interview an introduction of discourse analysis is in order. Modern linguistics under the influence of traditional grammar has focused on the sentence as the main element of language. Recently evidence of a shift in interest has mounted in the form of linguist’s interest in oral and written communication as a central pillar of communication.
