In the recent years, switches have become very advances. Now, not only they support fiber-optic networks and very high data speeds, but also offer the capability to deliver the packets to particular ports. The role of switches in the past has been to complement the role of routers. While routers enable the switching of packets between different networks by dividing networks into broadcast domain, the switches enable the provision of a high speed link for each node of the network by creating separate collision domains (Lammle, 2007).

Though routers have the built in capability to route the packet to particular groups of nodes, through the creation of broadcast domain, the processing involved makes the routing considerably slower than switches, making the network designer follow the rule of “switch when you can, route when you must”. In order to overcome this issue, switches have now been enabled to allow for creation of broadcast domain at layer 2, through Virtual LANs (VLANs). Through VLANs, ports can be groups together logically, so that each broadcast to a particular VLAN is delivered to only those ports which are assigned the same VLAN. These VLANs can be created by the MAC addresses of the port or through creation of a relationship between VLAN and IP addresses. In order to manage the addition, deletion and renaming of the VLANs on network to network basis, several protocols also exist. The most famous of such protocols is the VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP), which is a Cisco Corporation’s proprietary layer 2 messaging protocol. Other protocols include GARP VLAN Registration Protocol (GVRP) and Multiple VLAN Registration Protocol (MVRP). All these protocols enable the sharing of VLAN information dynamically and provide a method to configure the VLANs as required (Deal, 2003).

In order to enable the inter-VLAN Routing of packets, three types of key devices must be configured for the routing. These are Hosts, Switches and Routers. Hosts are the systems which, though do not participate in the switching of the packets, must be configured with a default gateway so that the packets generated on these devices are routed to the correct entity (the network router).Furthermore, one of the fundamental concepts of the IP routing paradigm is that the routing is done on a per-hop basis.
