The International Organisation for Standardisation sets out standards for various processes and systems for companies throughout the world. Various standard setting bodies audit organisations and issue certificates to these companies which confirm that these companies are performing operations in accordance with standards set out by ISO (Hoyle 2006). ISO 9001:2000 is one of the standards established by ISO for quality management and explains the criteria a company must meet in order to receive a certificate of quality management.

The standard describes the requirements for companies of any size and nature in order to achieve consistent quality in products and services which are the primary determinants of customer satisfaction (Grimes 2003).
