Choosing a right Internet connectivity solution is as much important as choosing the right configuration of hardware for the server. It is important because a low-speed connection can easily be filled by traffic that would be built when a lot of troubleshooting tasks are carried out in parallel. Currently, Web hosting companies use various types of connectivity solutions to suit the bandwidth they provide with their service. A discussion of these technologies is presented in the following lines.

Current Internet Technologies in Use

ADSL Connection

Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) is a technology which is used to provide high-speed data connectivity over existing copper wires of the telephone network. The biggest advantage of ADSL line is that they support the simultaneous transfer of data and voice. Hence, ADSL offers a cheap high-speed connectivity option for the company with reduced cost of infrastructure (due to the use of existing telephone lines). However, this is also a disadvantage of the DSL connection as well. Since it is totally dependent on telephone lines for its connectivity, any disconnection or disruption of telephone service would result in termination of ADSL connection as well, which would bring the company’s server offline. Therefore, many companies which consider this option often have backups as well. The maximum speed supported by an ADSL connection is 24Mbits per second, which would be sufficient in the start of the service; however, as the company would gain more customers, it would require an upgrade.

Cable Connection

In Cable connectivity, the ISP provides the connectivity to the Internet using its existing Cable TV infrastructure. It would the installation of a Cable Modem device at the premises of the server, which acts as a bridge and facilitates bi-directional communication of data through the use of Radio Frequency. An advantage of using a cable connection is its shielded wire, which protects the data transmission from outside interference. As a result, a Cable connection is able to support up 171 Mbps of data throughput. A cable connection is significantly expensive than a DSL connection, however, its higher data rate makes it the preferred choice when comparing it with ADSL in the given scenario.

Dark Fiber

Many ISPs maintain a certain amount of optic fibers in their network as redundant. These optic fibers are totally unused (unlit/dark) and offered by the ISPs for use to other organization. It offers a very high transfer rate (in Gigabits) and much less latency as compared to other types of connectivity option. However, the use of fiber optics is quite expensive, as its cost companies a lot to deploy the fiber optics cable to the required placed (Azzam & Ransom, 1999).

Recommended Selection

The fiber optic connectivity should be the preferred choice of the company for providing Internet connectivity to the application server. This is because once purchased, dark fiber offers a lot of option for bandwidth upgrade which company can do according to the it’s needed and hence would be very cost-effective. The second choice should be the Cable Connection, which also offers a significantly high speed to enable the application server to support a large number of tasks to take place simultaneously.
