Pablo Picasso

Pablo Picasso was a gifted artist aptly termed a child prodigy by his father and teacher, Don Jose Ruiz, a professional teacher in his own right. Pablo Diego Ruiz Picasso, named after his father and mother according to Spanish tradition, had been wrought with artistic talent throughout his life, from early stages demonstrating an expansive skill set in art forms such as sculpting, drawing, sketching, and painting. In total, Picasso’s works have been estimated to be around 50,000 which include around 1885 paintings (Mallen).

Since his artistic prowess started off at an early age, modernists have divided his work into a series of periods. Whereas some definitions are debatable, a handful of those periods are publicly accepted, such as the Blue Period (1901-1904), the Rose Period (1905-1907), the African Influenced Period (1907-09), Analytic Cubism (1909-1912) and Synthetic Cubism (1912-1919).

Picasso’s works were very clearly influenced by his prevailing moods of the time. He made some major contributions to art at the turn of the 20th century starting with the advent of the Blue Period, where the focus was more on using shades of blue and green. This was arguably as a result of his sister’s death at an early age and more so by his friend Carlos Casagemas’s suicide, influences which became the subject matter of his works in the form of beggars, prostitutes, mothers and children. He painted La Vie (1903) and the Frugal Repast (1904), both exemplifying the desperately poor times he was in. His works would depict blindness in that era, as seen in the Blindman’s Meal (1903), Celestina (1903) and the aforementioned Frugal Repast (1904). As time progressed, more colors were introduced into the picture in the Rose Period, such as orange and pink. It was around this time that he fell in love with a model, Fernande Olivier, leading to depictions of circus acrobats and harlequins, etc.
