NTFS partition differs a lot from FAT in term of its structure and function. However, like FAT you can have a primary or logical partition and can even create an extended partition in a logical partition. Since the NTFS was made for corporate and business environments, the maximum supported size of the partition is very large. NTFS let you create a partition of about 18 million Gigabytes. Considering FAT32, that is claimed to support 2TB partitions, but that comes at the cost of wasted disk space and gigantic file allocation table. On the other hand, NTFS was designed to handle these kinds of partition sizes and it does that in a very efficient manner (Kozierok).

One trouble with earlier versions of NTFS (until version 4.0) was the restriction on the boot partition. The earlier version of Windows NT created an FAT16 partition and converted it later to NTFS. Thus the partition on which the installation was made was always restricted to the maximum supported size of FAT16, 4GB. This was because of the older design of Windows NT which was done before the implementation of int13h extensions, required for large disk access. However, this restriction has been eliminated in the new version of NTFS that comes with Windows 2000, which allows the user to access the entire disk of size greater than 4GB using a single partition (Micheal and Acuña).
