Tornadoes can strike at any time of year, but the months of March through July saw the most violent twisters in the United States. Winter tornadoes, such as the one that killed at least 88 people in Kentucky and four other states starting on December 10, 2021, are rare.

However, researchers indicate in a poster presented at the American Geophysical Union’s autumn conference on December 13, 2021, that climate change might boost tornado strength in milder months by several orders of magnitude above what was previously projected.

Tornado patterns have evolved in the last 20 years, with these severe weather occurrences occurring later in the season and throughout a larger area of the United States than before. However, scientists have been unable to establish a causal correlation between the twister alterations and climate change induced by humans.

Furthermore, tornadoes, unlike hurricanes and other severe storm systems, occur on such a tiny scale that they are not included in most global climate simulations, according to Kevin Reed, an atmospheric scientist at Stony Brook University in New York who was not involved in the new study.
