The origins of the American health care system are explored in the film using backdrops from the Richard Nixon administration. A taped conversation between President Nixon and John Ehrlichman on February 17, 1971 has Ehrlichman telling Nixon about the plan that they have come up with concerning the health maintenance act of 1973. This plan would cover the health care needs of all Americans while creating an environment of profit. To which Nixon replied in an affirmative. This original arrangement was expanded into the HMO-based expression of the modern day health system in the United States (Moore, 2007).

This is further supplemented by reasons of why American does not have a universal health care system. It looks back to the era of Ronald Reagan when he was president. It was during this time that the President of the United States warned the population that socialist health care would lead to communism. The needs of the societal structure to distance itself from their perceived rivals the soviets created a need to abandon any and all relations to their culture and government. It created an imperative need within the population to abandon non-profit health care reform.
