John Steinbeck’s “The Pearl” is a timeless story of how the dreams of men do not always agree or even coincide with flow of life that has been planned for them. The story is set in La Paz, Mexico and follows the story of the protagonist Kino as he attempts to make a better life for himself and his family. He finds an invaluable object called the Pearl of the World. However, what at first seems to be a Godsend quickly turns into a curse which is only lifted after a terrible consequence occurs (Steinbeck).
The machinations of fate and belief in superstition are seeded throughout the tale and exemplify how we as human beings interact with the world around us. Songs of family, evil and the pearl of the world play throughout the story showing the different desires each of us as human’s exhibit.
