Essay: Policy on U.S Immigration Haiti
Sample Essay
Haiti is one of the poorest regions of the Western hemisphere. It is also regarded as one of the most chaotic regions. The seriousness of the situation has been aggravated by the incessant arrival of the illegitimate immigrants from the neighboring regions. The very existence of Haiti is defined by chaos (Thompson 2009). The devastating earthquake in Haiti turned thousands of houses into mud and caused utter destruction of the infrastructure of the capital city of Port au Prince.
The immigration policy of the U.S. on Haiti has been an object of acute criticism for many years. Before earthquake Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano had announced to suspend the implementation of order of exile to around 30,000 Haitian immigrants. But three days after the earthquake she announced asylum for around 100,000 to 200,000 Haitians who were living in the U.S as illegitimate immigrants were to be given Temporary Protected Status (TPS). TPS pledged to allow the immigrants to work in the next eighteen months in the U.S. There has also been an expectation of enormous migration from the island as a result of the devastation of Haiti earthquake. But Napolitano also warned that the attempts of leaving Haiti might incur further complexities for the people of Haiti.
