Problems, needs, and opportunities arise continuously in all organizations. Low operational efficiency, penetrating a new market or the need for additional office space are some of the situations the management need to address while operating an organization. Solutions to these problems introduce change in the organization and to carry out this change, projects are made. These projects need to be carried out skillfully and methodically in order to be successful and for this project management is used.
The Project Management Institute defines project management as the application of knowledge, skills, tools, and techniques to project activities to achieve project requirements. It is accomplished through application and integration of the project management processes of initiation, planning, execution, monitoring, controlling and closing. There are nine areas of knowledge defined for project management. These areas are Integration Management, Scope Management, Time Management, Cost Management, Quality Management, Human Resource Management, Communications Management, Risk Management and Procurement Management. It is necessary for a project manager to have knowledge in all nine areas to successfully accomplish his project (Heerkens, 2001).
This report takes a look at areas o knowledge for project management in the light of an interview with Bill Farnsworth of Microsoft Corporation. Bill is a Senior Partner Strategy Consultant and has 5 years of experience as an IT Project Manager. Project Integration Management
Project Integration Management defines processes to hold together all the other knowledge areas in such a way that the project plan will be a success. It involves making trade-off among competing objectives and alternatives in order to meet or exceed stakeholder needs or expectations (Kerzner, 2009).
Project Plan Development
This process uses the output of planning from planning processes in other knowledge areas to create a coherent and consistent document which can be used to guide project execution and control. The project plan development is iterative due to the nature of all projects moving from generic resources and timeline to specific resources and timeline. In project plan development not only the scope of the project is established but also cost and timing budgets of the project are prepared. Other aspects which are considered in the process include organization’s policies, constraints, and assumptions (Wysocki, 2004).
