Sample Essay

What is the main source of energy in the Sun and where in the Sun is the most energy being created? Do you think the Sun is gradually getting hotter or gradually cooler? Give a scientific explanation for the trend?

The main source of energy in the sun is nuclear fusion reaction which takes place in the core of the Sun. The sun is neither getting hotter or cooler.  It is because sun is a main sequence star and in hydrostatic equilibrium which is producing energy at a controlled rate (Bennett, Donahue, Schneider & Voit, 2000).

Question #4

If and when the Sun becomes a red giant star will it’s Luminosity increase or decrease from today? Explain.

When the Sun will become a red giant star, its luminosity will increase. This is because the core will stop the fusion reaction and begin to collapse causing the layer just above the core to become hot and start fusion again. This reaction will be much faster because the layers are under increasing pressure and temperature, causing more energy to be produced (Bennett, Donahue, Schneider & Voit, 2000).

Question #5

What is the primary source of energy for humans and most living things on Earth? What is the primary source of energy for wind power? How about tidal power?

The Sun is the primary source of energy for most living things on earth. It is also the primary source of energy for wind power, producing flow of air by causing temperature difference in parts of earth surface. Primary source of tidal power, however, is moon rather than sun. Its gravity produces tides on earth surface (Bennett, Donahue, Schneider & Voit, 2000).
