The rejection of a null hypothesis that predicts that the weight of the paints are less than is indicated gives the company confidence that it is actually more than indicated even though it does not prove that the company’s position is true. However, there may be some unexpected results.

The observed data, which in this case is the weight of the paints, might possibly show that the paints are neither less than the indicated amount nor more than the indicated amount. In other words, it could be be one gallon as stated. In such a situation, the null and alternative hypothesis may be reversed in the sense that they both may be altered for further considerations. This may point to flaws in the weighing system of the company and the clients and there may be need to harmonize such system.
