Repressing painful past memories can have negative impacts on the physical well being. Hall witnessed this through his mother. She felt guilty for the bad way in which she treated her son.

It was only after Hall helped her overcome it that she admitted that it had been a problem for her, though she bore it painfully (Nkara, 6). On her deathbed, Hall observed that she seemed to be even more troubled by something else rather than the illness. When her son takes her through the healing process, she finally releases the memories by admitting that though she physically abused him, she was only doing what she knew.
