While Noise Induced Hearing Loss can be clinically quantified. The generalized nature of the disability in terms of onset makes it difficult to catalogue the disorder and in turn calculate its rate of incidence (Reid, 2005). Manifestation of excessive noise can occur first as ringing in the ears, followed by loss of balance and increase in stress levels. An individual’s blood pressure can also increase which can concurrently affect the eyes as well interfering with the ability to focus, especially at night.

Balance and concentration are thus more affected at night and the interaction of noise with other factors at the workplace such as carbon monoxide, trichloroethylene, vibration and heat can also aggravate hearing loss. In fact noise levels of 120dB can actually cause individuals to experience pain in their ears (Workers Health Centre, 2002).

Data collected by the United States National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders shows that at least 10% of the American population which consists of 28 million citizens in 1999 suffered from hearing disorders due to exposure to noise. Further statistics showed how another 39-42 million people were at risk of acquiring noise induced hearing loss or were already suffering from such a malady (Reid, 2005).
