For, after all, how do we know that two and two make four? Or that the force of gravity works? Or that the past is unchangeable? If both the past and the external world exist only in the mind, and if the mind itself is controllable—what then? (Orwell)Thus this is where this mathematical statement becomes an essential motif in the novel where if allowed to be expressed truthfully and correctly would show that the freedom to speak and think and believe in what one feels is right reigns which was not granted here. Which goes onto reflect as to how this brain washing literally goes far enough to even alter and change facts and figures, “If all records told the same tale — then the lie passed into history and became truth.”, and which was then justified by the assertion that “All rulers in all ages have tried to impose a false view of the world upon their followers”. This would make the people believe in false truths and rearranging the entire course of history and present to meet their own needs.
