The Untold Story of American Nurses Trapped on Bataan by the Japanese”, in the nursing history. It will be wrong to mention that woman at war is a new topic, but Elizabeth M. Norman, in this convincing book about the Angels of Bataan and Corregidor brings new verve to an elapsed chapter of World War II record. The Angels of Bataan and Corregidor were a group of army and navy, American nurses who served in the pleasant Philippine Islands in 1941. By August 1942, they were prisoners in a Japanese imprisonment camp and remained there for almost 3 years.

United States Forces had them released in February 1945, but not before the nurses’ endured malnutrition and psychological trauma and various ailments. The overall purpose of this book is not to idolize this group of women. Many of the nurses were youthful and determined, eager to run away from customary societal roles. They enrolled in the military in search of adventure in the Far East Command. Few already knew about the negative effects of war, and none predicted the deprivation of imprisonment. The legacy of this group is their sheer willpower to survive and that is what the ‘Nursing’ profession is all about.
