As the film begins the first details regarding victims of the practices of the health care industry come to light. Larry and Donna smith were participating individuals in the community who worked towards following social norms and creating lives for themselves in their communities. They were both hard working individuals with health insurance. However, when Larry had a heart attack and Donna got cancer the insurance company rejected payment for their treatment and they eventually had to sell their home in order to pay off their debts (Moore, 2007).

This is followed by the example of a 79 year old man who still works in order to pay for his insurance and medication in order to provide for himself and his spouse. In societal terms it is understandable for the old couple to be in a state of dependency (Moore, 2007). Thus, society would be required to pay for their social welfare. However, when a system cannot cater not only those who are able to meet their roles in society but also for those who are dependent on it, then the system is simply broken (Johnson & Rhodes, 2005).
